1. Squealing or squeaking
Brakes wear gradually, so the first sign of a problem is not always a dramatic warning light. A change in sound, pedal feel, vibration or stopping behaviour can provide an early clue that pads, discs or another part of the braking system needs attention.
No single symptom tells you exactly how much brake material remains. Brake life varies with vehicle weight, driving style, road conditions, component design and use. An inspection is more reliable than a generic mileage estimate.
Brake squeal can be caused by wear indicators on some pad designs, but it can also result from dust, moisture, glazing, pad compound, surface corrosion or vibration.
That means a squeal is a reason to pay attention, not proof that the pads have reached one exact thickness.
If the sound appears only briefly after the car has been parked in rain, light surface rust may clear after normal braking. If it persists, becomes louder or is accompanied by vibration or reduced performance, arrange inspection.
2. Grinding or harsh metal-on-metal sounds
Grinding is more concerning. It can indicate severely worn friction material, damaged discs or another mechanical issue in the brake or wheel area.
Continuing to drive can increase damage and may compromise braking. Stop using the vehicle if braking feels unsafe and obtain recovery or professional advice.
Do not try to “clean” the brakes by repeatedly braking hard. The cause needs to be identified.
3. Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel
A pulsation or vibration that consistently occurs under braking can be associated with disc thickness variation, heat damage, contamination, suspension issues or other faults.
Vibration that occurs at speed even without braking may come from tyres, wheels or suspension rather than brakes. Note when the symptom appears and whether it changes with road speed or brake pressure.
A mechanic can inspect the braking components and measure them against the manufacturer's limits where necessary.
4. The car pulls to one side under braking
Pulling can be caused by uneven braking force, a sticking calliper, contaminated friction surfaces, tyre issues, alignment or suspension faults.
Because several safety-critical systems can produce a similar symptom, do not assume one brake pad is simply “more worn”. Have the car inspected.

6. Brake warning lights or messages
Modern vehicles can display several different brake-related warnings, including parking-brake systems, ABS, stability control, brake wear monitoring and hydraulic warnings.
Check the handbook for the exact symbol. Some messages indicate a service requirement while others require immediate action.
Do not clear the warning by disconnecting the battery or using a diagnostic tool without resolving the underlying fault. A reset can hide useful information from the mechanic.
7. Longer stopping distance or inconsistent braking
If the car takes noticeably longer to stop under comparable conditions or braking feels inconsistent, arrange assessment. Tyres, road surface and weather also affect stopping distance, so compare behaviour carefully.
A change can come from brakes, tyres, suspension or another issue. It is the change from the vehicle's normal behaviour that matters.
Do not perform high-speed stopping tests on public roads to diagnose the problem yourself.
8. Brake-fluid level changes
Many cars have a transparent reservoir that allows the level to be observed without opening it. Brake-fluid level can move as pads wear, but a significant or sudden drop can also indicate a leak.
Do not repeatedly top up fluid without understanding why it is low. A brake-fluid leak is a safety issue and requires inspection.
Only use the specified fluid if topping up is explicitly appropriate under the manufacturer guidance; different specifications are not automatically interchangeable.
Pads, discs, drums and other components
Not every car uses the same braking arrangement. Many use discs and pads at the front and may use discs or drums at the rear. Electric parking brakes and regenerative braking can also change wear patterns.
A full brake inspection may consider:

Can you inspect brake pads yourself?
Some wheels allow a limited visual view of the outer pad and disc, but this does not show every friction surface or component. Inner pads can wear differently and measurements may be needed.
Do not work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. Brake repair requires correct lifting, torque procedures, component knowledge and often diagnostic steps on modern vehicles.
If you are not competent and equipped for brake work, use a mechanic.
Brake wear on electric and hybrid cars
Regenerative braking uses the electric motor to slow the vehicle and can reduce use of the friction brakes in some driving. This does not mean the friction brakes are maintenance-free.
